Planting
Watermelons are a warm season crop. Choose a warm and sunny location, preferably south facing. Add ? cup of bone meal to each foot of row at planting time. Seeds may be started indoors and transplanted into the garden.
Care
Thin when plants touch each other. It is helpful to cover the area with black plastic mulch after thinning or cover with organic mulch.
Harvest
Check the color of the surface touching the ground. As the melon matures the ‘ground spot’ turns slightly yellow. Also most watermelons lose their slick appearance on the top surface and become dull when ripe.
Hint
Watermelon does not become sweeter after harvest. It must be picked ripe.
