Description

Lettuce is one of the easiest crops to grow. Smaller, more frequent plantings are ideal and lettuce can be sown in a variety of areas throughout the garden. This mixture of the Salad Bowl variety contains green and red leaves and takes more heat than other types of lettuce. This variety, “Salad Bowl” is an All-America Selections Winner meaning that it has been tested by a network of independent judges who determined that its garden performance was superior.

Planting

Lettuce is a cool weather crop. In mild climates seed can be sown directly in the soil in late winter/early spring and again in the fall. Sow seed in 2 week intervals for prolonged harvest.

Care

Thin when plants are 2 inches high. Mulch to keep the plants cool and to retain moisture. Water frequently but lightly. Fertilize with a 10-10-10 or similar fertilizer.

Harvest

Loose leaf lettuce is best harvested by cutting the outer leaves first or cutting the entire plant back and letting it grow out. Keeps in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Hint

Harvest in early morning when leaves are crisp and full of moisture.
