Sultan 6

Sportsfield Quality Improved Bermudagrass

Description

Sultan brand, variety FMC-6 (Sultan 6) represents the best of a new generation of seeded turf-type bermudagrass varieties.

From the research program that released “Sahara”, Sultan 6 is a top ranking entry in national tests since 1992. Significantly improved density, medium fine texture, dark green color and maximum uniformity set Sultan 6 apart from other
seeded bermudagrasses.

Sultan is a synthetic seed propagated variety developed by Dr. Arden Baltensperger released in 1994. Breeding involved three cycles of phenotypic recurrent selection of progeny from fourteen elite cross-fertile clones. The original
clones were collected in the U.S. and Southern Europe for desirable turf characteristics.

Selection of intercrossed plants was primarily based on leaf texture, density, shoot extension rate and bermudagrass stunt mite resistance.

Characteristics

FEATURES:

  • Medium fine texture
  • Increased density
  • Higher density
  • Dark green color
  • Superior drought tolerance
  • Low in thatch
  • Reduced plant height

BENEFITS:

  • Uniform growth habit
  • Increased durability and wear tolerance
  • Increased fertilizer efficiency
  • Low water requirement
  • Lower mowing heights with less scalping
  • Reduced mower clippings

Uses

High traffic areas including:
Sportsfields, Parks/Playgrounds,Cemetaries, Golf Courses – fairways, tees & roughs, Home Lawns, Erosion Control.

Sultan is ideal in mixtures with Perennial Ryegrass such as “Pro Sportsfield Supreme”. Sultan may be seeded into established stands of seeded bermuda and some vegetative bermudas to improve density and overall performance.

Seeding Rates

New turf: 4 pounds per 1000 square feet or 175 pounds per acre.

Overseeding: 1 to 2 pounds per 1000 square feet or 45-90 pounds per acre. (Seed in Hulled/coated form)

Establishment

Emergence: 10-14 days. Germination delayed if soil temperatures are below 65° F
First mowing: Approximately 21 days (may be longer in cool season). No special mower is required.
First limited use: One week after first mowing depending upon rate of establishment.

Adaptability & Care

Climatic Conditions: Temperate, sub-tropical and tropical climate zones.
Soils: All soil types.
pH range: Adapted to an extremely broad pH range.
Salinity: Can tolerate high saline conditions, however during establishment soil moisture drainage is very important.
Fertilization: 1 pound of actual nitrogen per 1000 sq feet per month during the growing season.
Mowing height: Minimum recommended mowing height is 1/2 inch.

Quality Assurance

Sultan is a certified variety of bermudagrass protected under U.S. Plant Variety Protection Act, PVP# 9500020. Sale of non-certified seed is prohibited by Federal law.

Accept no substitutes.

To determine whether a cultivar’s performance is truly different from another, subtract one entry’s mean from another entry’s mean.

If this value is larger than the LSD value, the observed difference in cultivar performance is significant and did not happen by chance. Complete tables available upon request.
