Description

Okra is a warm weather, short season crop and grows well under the same conditions as sweet corn. It grows to a size of 5 feet tall with large leaves and very showy flowers. Okra is popular in soups and gumbos or when breaded and fried. This variety is an All-America Selections Winner meaning that it has been tested by a network of independent judges who determined that their garden performance was superior.

Planting

Soak seed for 24 hours prior to planting. Do not plant until the soil is warm. Seeds may be started indoors and transplanted into the garden.

Care

Thin when plants are 3 inches high. Mulch to keep weeds down and retain moisture. Plants need to be staked as they grow.

Harvest

Harvest the pods when they are 2-3 inches long. Harvest every 2-3 days to encourage production. If pods are left to ripen, the plant will stop producing.

Hint

Wear gloves and long sleeves when harvesting to avoid skin irritation.
