A	Annual. Completes life cycle in one year or growing season, essentially non-woody.
A/B	Annual or Biennial
A/P	Annual or Perennial
B	Biennial. Completes life cycle in two years or growing seasons, generally flowering only in the second, non-woody above ground.
P	Perennial. Living more than two years or growing seasons, essentially non-wood above ground.
P/B	Perennial or Biennial.

CAT	Cattail
CLVR	Clover. In the legume family.
FLWR	Flower. Non-woody plant grown primarily for its display of flower color.
GRCV	Ground Cover.
GRSS	Grass.
HERB	Herb. A plant without a persistent woody stem.
RUSH	Rush. Grass-like plant. Differs from true grass as it has solid, stiff cylindrical stems.
SDG	Sedge. Grasslike plant. Differs from true grass as it has triangular stems.
SHRB	Shrub. A woody plant of smaller proportions than a tree, and which usually produces several branches from a base.
SSHRB	Subshrub. A plant with woody lower stems and herbaceous upper stems that die back seasonally.
TREE	Tree. A woody plant with a tall final height, commonly with one stem (trunk) from the base.
VINE	Vine. Woody or herbaceous with either climbing or ground crawling characteristics.

AQUA	Aquatic. Grows only in a body of water
ASND	Ascending. Rising or curving upward.
BNCH	Bunching growth habit. Produces tillers or small stems at the base and grows as a clump or bunch.
CLMP	Clumping. Same as above.
COOL	Cool Season. Usually refers to a grass. Grows primarily during the cooler months of spring and fall (winter also in mild climates).
DCD	Deciduous. Loses leaves, usually in fall and early winter. New leaves emerge in spring.
DCMB	Decumbent. Lying down but with tips ascending.
ERCT	Erect. Upright in relation to the ground.
EVGR	Evergreen. Having living leaves throughout the year.
FH	Fire Hazard. Produces plant material that promotes the spread of fires.
FR	Fire Resistant. Less combustible or low-fuel plants.
INV	Invasive. Plant has a propensity to spread either by reseeding or stolonizing and tends to monopolize a plant community.
LF	Low Fuel. Does not produce plant material that promotes the spread of fires.
LGME	Legume. A plant that maintains a symbiotic relationship with various soil bacteria that make atmospheric nitrogen available for plant use. Members of this family include lupins, clover, alfalfa and soybeans which provide animal feed or green manure.
ORNM	Ornamental. Usually a non-native plant that grows under cultivated conditions in the landscape.
PRST	Prostrate. Lying flat on the ground.
RHIZ	Rhizomes. Grows by producing underground stems called rhizomes.
RPRN	Riparian. Streamside, an association of plant species growing adjacent to freshwater sources, including perennial and intermittent streams, lakes and other bodies of fresh water.
SOD	Sod. Grasses that typically spread by rhizomes, stolons or tillers which develop into a uniform cover. Generally recover from injury or grazing.
STLN	Stolons. Similar to rhizones but stems are above ground.
TOX	Toxic. All or parts of plant are toxic.
WARM	Warm Season. Usually refers to a grass. Grows only during the warmer months of the year and usually goes dormant or off-color during the winter months.
WTLD	Wetlands. Lands where saturation with water is the dominant factor. Generally includes swamps, marshes, bogs and similar areas. Grows on the edge of bodies of water where flooding may occur.

CULT	Cultivated. The plant is grown as a commercial crop and either the plant or seeds are collected and sold.
DFCT	Difficult to establish from seed.
DRAIN	Drainage. Requires excellent drainage.
DRY	Drought Tolerant. Requires little or no supplemental watering.
IRR	Irrigation. Requires moderate summer watering.
PSHD	Partial shade. Tolerates partial sun/shade.
SHD	Shade. Does best in full or part shade, may tolerate morning and winter sun.
STBL	Stabilizer. Root structure stabilizes disturbed areas, helps prevent erosion on slopes.
SUN	Does best in full or nearly full sun. Tolerates summer afternoon sun.
WET	Roots need to be continually moist or in wet soil.
WILD	Wildlands collected. Seed is harvested by hand from established plants in the wild.

ACD	Acidic. Soil pH below 7.
ALK	Alkaline. Soil pH above 7.
BRN	Boron. High boron content.
CLY	Clay. Heavy soil. Holds water and nutrients. Slow to drain.
GRV	Gravel.
LM	Loam. Ideal garden soil. Contains clay, silt and sand.
NS	Non-specific. Research indicates no particular preference.
RKY	Rocky.
SER	Serpentine. Magnesium rich, nutrient poor.
SLN	Saline. Large quantities of soluble salts.
SND	Sandy. Drains quickly. Does not hold water and nutrients well.

CA	Coastal Areas. Coastline inland to where climate is influenced directly by the ocean. Sandy beaches to coastal dunes.
CC	Chaparral or Coastal Scrub. Elevations up to 5,000 feet along coastal ranges and Sierra Nevada Foothills. Typically dry summers and mild rainy winters.
D	Deserts. Consists of plants adapted to the high and low deserts.
DM	Desert Mountains. Limited to small areas of deserts with higher elevations.
FOW	Foothill, Oak, Woodlands. Foothills of mountain ranges, mostly the western slope of the Sierra Nevada range between 1,000 and 3,000 feet.
G	Grasslands. Typically inland valleys including the San Joaquin Valley and Los Angeles Basin.
MTN	Mountains. A large zone that encompasses areas above 3,500 feet up to 10,000 feet. Refer to individual elevation ranges of species to determine optimal conditions.
