Alternates
Alternate species are listed only if the defined species is listed as having uncommon availability or being expensive in cost. Alternates are listed with their botanical abbreviation. The reader can refer to the column
under “Abbreviation” for a description of the suggested alternate. The alternates that are recommended are generally consistent with certain attributes, such as zones, plant communities, horticultural characteristics and
soil conditions which are most important in plant establishment. Alternates may not necessarily be consistent on such attributes as flower color, bloom period, plant height and other general characteristics. Study each
alternate listed to determine which species most closely matches your requirements.
