Sultan brand, variety FMC-6 (Sultan 6) represents the best of a new generation of seeded turf-type bermudagrass varieties. From the research program that released Sahara, Sultan 6 is a top ranking entry in national tests since 1992. Significantly improved density, medium fine texture, dark green color and maximum uniformity set Sultan 6 apart from other seeded bermudagrasses. Sultan is a synthetic seed propagated variety developed by Dr. Arden Baltensperger released in 1994. Breeding involved three cycles of phenotypic recurrent selection of progeny from fourteen elite cross-fertile clones. The original clones were collected in the U.S. and Southern Europe for desirable turf characteristics. Selection of intercrossed plants was primarily based on leaf texture, density, shoot extension rate and bermudagrass stunt mite resistance. |

To determine whether a cultivar's performance is truly different from another, subtract one entry's mean from another entry's mean. If this value is larger than the LSD value, the observed difference in cultivar performance is significant and did not happen by chance. Complete tables available upon request. |
